The purpose of this study was to explore the Orientation and Mobility courses and teaching professional ability. A questionnaire was distributed to 64 teachers who are currently serving as Orientation and Mobility teachers in Mainland China and Taiwan, 32 teachers from each area. The results of this study showed that:1) Most of the 50 items of the questionnaire were considered to be“very important”or“important”at the degree of importance higher than 3.5. Four out of the 50 questions were rated less than 3.5 and was precluded. The rest 46 questions consisted of the“Orientation and Mobility Capability Test Tables.”2. These Orientation and Mobility teachers were rated as“capable”of their professional requirements. However, their average rating fell between 3.0 and 3.5, indicating a potential improvement would be expected. Further practical trainings are required to improve their professional competence. 3. The importance and the capability of the Orientation and Mobility teaching were rated differently by teachers between Mainland China and Taiwan. However, there was no significant difference on the rating results of teachers among varied age groups. 5. All Orientation and Mobility courses teachers from both areas considered professional trainings as necessary. 6. It is proposed that the items with importance above 3.5 be compiled as the“Check List Professional Ability to Orientation and Mobility“; while the items with capability rating less than 3.5 were considered as a reference for courses of professional training of Orientation and Mobility teachers. |
