Cases of oral cancer, for which surgery is the primary treatment, are increasing annually. Subsequent impaired swallowing function, followed by saliva accumulation, can hinder the woundhealing process in the oral cavity. Comprehensive oral care during the postoperative course can promote wound healing. This project improved the comprehensiveness of oral care in patients with oral cancer during their postoperative course. This project included holding a conference in which doctors and nurses could achieve a consensus on oral hygiene, establish a standard oral care process, design and distribute forms to assist nursing instructions, develop nursing education, and establish a quality-monitoring mechanism. Through this project, the comprehensiveness of oral care in patients increased from 46% to 96%. The accuracy of nursing instructions and the comprehensiveness of medical orders was 100%. This constructed process of oral care in patients with oral cancer during postoperative course can effectively raise the quality of oral care. |
