The aim of our research is to evaluate the effectiveness of yoga exercises during the pregnancy period by using quasi-experimental trial which was divided into two stages. The participants were at least at 20 weeks of gestation and had no other obstetric complications. Data were collected between 2009 and 2010. There were 59 participants in the control group who used standard antenatal nursing instruction, and 32 in the experimental group who were given pregnancy sports manual, demo courses, and attended yoga exercises four times during their pregnancy. All the women completed mental and physical discomfort and sleep quality scale at pregnancy weeks 20-24 and pregnancy weeks 28-32. The results indicated that the score of mental and physical discomfort between the control and experimental group were signifi cant (p<.001). However, the sleep quality score between the control and experimental group were even more signifi cant (p<.05). In order to relieve symptoms of mental and physical discomfort, promoting relaxing exercises during pregnancy could help treat sleep distress. Relaxing Yoga exercises performed during pregnancy could diminish discomfort and improve sleep to fulfi ll the clinical practice of promoting health and quality of life. |
