Henri Dutilleux is one of the most important French composers of the second half of the 20th century. He has produced work in the tradition of impressionistic music, but in a style distinctly his own. Although his output is relatively small, its high quality and originality have won numerous international praises. Dutilleux numbered as Op. 1 his Piano Sonata, written for his wife, pianist Geneviève Joy, and has renounced most of the works he composed before it because he did not believe them to be representative of his mature standards. His music extends the legacies of Debussy. As a stylistically independent composer, he always refused to be associated with any school. Rather, his works merge the tradition of impressionism and the atonal innovations and he translates them into his own idiosyncratic style. Very refined instrumental textures, fluid accidentals, divers variations are some characteristics of him.The present article situates the work in its contemporary context, illuminating points of theoretical significance as they relate to the composer's ongoing creative development and distinctive musical language. |
