With the increasing complexity of the health care settings, nurses need to continuously absorbnew information about a timely fashion so that they can employ evidence-based knowledge andskills to provide good quality patient care and to maintain safety and optimal benefits for the patients.By implementing evidence-based nursing (EBN), nurses identify clinical problems, search thebest evidence in a short period of time, correctly appraise the literature, and make clinical decisionsbased on evidence. The application of EBN helps bridge the gap between empirical research andclinical practice. This paper introduces the basic concepts and the five steps of EBN. In addition, acase scenario is provided to exemplify these steps. After reading the paper, nurses can have abetter understanding of EBN. Hopefully, nurses will apply EBN in their practice to identify problemsin clinical situations and to establish the best problem-solving protocol. |
