This study aimed to improve the noise level of the pediatric ward in a medical center in metropolitanTaipei, Taiwan. Because the satisfaction survey showed that the satisfaction level of theitem 'maintaining quietness in the ward' was only 79.3%, the ward noise level improvement teamwas established on May 13, 2004. Based on the questionnaire survey and actual measurement, thefive most frequently occurring noise sources in the ward included the sounds of pulling and releasingthe bed handrails, sounds of pushing work carts, crying and nagging sounds of children, phonesringing, and noises made by staff. The average decibel of those five noises was 73.6, which washigher than the hospital noises threshold specified by the Environmental ProtectionAdministration. After implementing the improvement plan for two months, the measured noise level decreased by10 decibels, and the frequency of occurrence was reduced by over 20%. Thus, a noise improvementplan can effectively improve the quietness in the ward. Hopefully this plan can be promoted toother wards to lift the overall calmness of the medical environment.Key words: |
