After Nationalist China severed diplomatic relations with Germany in the July of 1941, the close political, economic and diplomatic relations established since 1930s failed to resume again from then on. In early 1950s, the Nationalist government in Taiwan attempted to restore prewar substantial relationship with the newly formed the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). However, limited by its“One Germany'' policy, the West German government tried to avoid getting involved in the sovereignty dispute on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. Except for the economic and cultural activities existing between these two countries, it was extremely difficult to set up any substantial political channels for dialogues. |
