Veterans Plastics Works (VPW) was found in 1972, a golden era for Taiwan's plastics industry. Rising profit from processing plastic products pushed new plants to be established one by one, especially after USI Far East Corporation (USIFE), a foreigner directly invested corporation which produced polyethylene materials for domestic processing use, found in 1968. During VPW's founding, USIFE not only rendered technological assistance to help this junior state-owned processing works enter industry and market related, but also invited it to join their profit-making joint-investment project in monopolistic producing of high-density polyethylene. This article finds, the main motivation for USIFE to choose to play such an important role in VPW's founding, was aimed at building a channel through VPW to connect to the authorities, so as to affect government's decision making, for USIFE's benefit. |
