Pressure sensitive tapes are often used to mend the tears on paper. However, this kind of tape accelerates the deterioration of paper. The best solution to stabilize those tape-mended papers is removing the tapes. Pressure sensitive tape is constructed of two major layers: adhesive layer, which gives the adhesion and tack, and carrier layer, which supports the adhesive. Conservators have to remove the carrier first and then clean the residual adseive. Pressure sensitive adhesive is liquid-like at high temperature, the carriers can be removed by heating so that it would be easier to clean the residual adhesives. |
