This study is aimed at exploring the development of elementary and secondary school textbooks over the past century, beginning from the late Ching dynasty, from the perspective of historical archives and educational policy. Diving into the research from issues such as the wave of the introduction of western knowledge to late Ching society, the textbook publishing industry founded by Christian Church, the textbooks edited by Chinese native, the development of textbook review and approval system, the establishment of National Institute for Compilation and Translation, the corporation of textbook publishing, the qualitative change in textbook in the face of warfare, and the development of textbook system in Taiwan and so on, the changes in education and textbook systems under the fluctuation of societal and political environments are witnessed. In the end of this study, there are brief statements on the current status of the conservation of the textbook historical archives in Taiwan, and on the prospects of textbook research in the future. |
