Recently, the safety issue of patients has been a topic of focus in developedcountries. A study published in 1999 "To Err is Human," mentions that in the USA,the number of people who died from medical malpractice is far more than that fromtraffic accidents. Therefore, the "promotion of patients1 safety" has become animportant topic in the medical system. Improving the safety of medications andimproving the safety of using high~alert medications are two patients1 safety targetsof the Taiwan1s Department of Health. Under this premise, the patients1 safety unitof nursing department publishes patients' safety manuals as guides for practicingnurses. The information covers medication safety, correct use of medications, management of general medications and controlled medications, recognition andcontrol of high~ risk medications. Wrong use of medication is the most frequentform of medical malpractice. Nurses should be competent in medication identificationand be alert when performing clinical works. All health care professionals shouldvalue each patient's safety in order to avoid malpractice. |
