This article was based on a case of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) of a health care worker during her first pregnancy. It mainly described the patient's physical, psychological, and spiritual problems caused by the infectious disease, pregnancy, and isolation, where the nursing methods were used. During the caring period, from May 18, 2003 to June 19, 2003, we collected the information through interviews , clinical observation, and physical assessment. According to the eleven criteria of Gordon, the patient had an infection, respiratory failure, anxiety and self-conflict. However, she built a good patient-nurse relationship with the author in a short period of time. In collaboration with the health care team and professional nursing knowledge, the patient's physical illness was eased while listening, experience sharing, and up-to-date information providing were mental cures for her. With SARS during pregnancy, the case was rare and showed different problems. Nurses played an important role in the caring. |
