Using a cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between symptom knowing and management and self-esteem of school-age children with asthma. 210 school-age children with asthma from a medical center in Taipei participated in the study and filled out the asthma symptom knowing and management scale and Hare's self-esteem scale. Pilot study was performed to examine the expert validity and internal consistency. The results showed: The mean scores of symptoms knowing and management, peer self-esteem, and family self-esteem of the 4th to 6th grade children were significantly higher than the 1st to 3rd grade children. Father's education level equal to or higher than university had higher family self-esteem. There was a significant positive correlation between symptom knowing and management and self-esteem than others. Results of the present study suggest the demands of enhancing children's knowledge of symptom knowing and management, as well as the basis to assist children's enhancing their self-esteem. |
