By using indigenous nursing field study, the authors intended to explore the essential characteristics of "anxiety" which is frequently used in Taiwanese. Fifteen participants were interviewed in order to collect and analyze the live experience around the concept of anxiety. The authors not only presented the participants' with emic perspectives on the concept of "anxiety" but also tried to accumulate the indigenous knowledge of nursing. The authors discovered that (1) anxiety is presented as a complex of emotional experience, (2) anxiety is not the daily language which Taiwanese used to address their encounter with anxiety, (3) the illness narrative, attributes, and responding behavior are different from the counterpart of the Western. The result of this research proposed the crucial role of culture on nursing professionals. For applying appropriate nursing practice on the client we care, nurses should try to understand the illness narrative derived from emic perspective of our clients. |
