Nurses work together with the cancer patients experiencing the complexity of the cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective experience of the novice oncology nurses. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The quantitative instruments included the Nurse Stress Checklist, Jalowiec Coping Scale and the Spiritual Orientation Inventory. The qualitative method was an indepth interview. Nineteen nurses were invited to answer the questionnaires; 6 randomly selected nurses were interviewed. The major areas that nurses identified in the categories of stress, spiritual domain, and coping strategies were nerves, the human potential for kindness and love, and relaxation. Five major domains emerged from the interview data: Knowing the cancer patients, thoughts and feelings about cancer; interaction between nurses and patients, caring actions and coping strategies. The professional relationship transited from helping to partnership. This content extends the development of the nursing profession. |
