Delicate microsurgical instruments are indispensable for micro surgeries. The Central Supply Room (CSR) in our hospital is responsible for the treatment of delicate microsurgical instruments after being used, to include counting, cleaning, decontaminating, visual inspection, maintenance, package, sterilization. The 1998 annual statistics showed that the total damage rate of these instruments was 6.1% in our hospital. However, among 6.1%, 2.3% of the damage happened during the management process in CSR. The purpose of this project is to decrease the damage rate in CSR in order to reduce the impact on surgeries, labor expenditure, and cost. Since the beginning of 1999, we have executed this plan to monitor the damage rate. Within 6 months, the damage rate fell dramatically from 2.3% to 0.23%. Therefore, the number of cancelled or delayed surgery cases dropped from 2 to 0, the cost on the repair of the instruments and the supply for the new instruments reduced from NT$12,617 to NT$567, and the time for arranging the repair was shortened from 8.26 to 0.97 hours every month. In conclusion, this project proved to be extremely effective in decreasing delicate microsurgical instruments damage rate in CSR in our hospital. Meanwhile, it does not only promote the quality of surgeries, but also decrease the labor expenses and cost. |
