In an era of booming Internet, social media have become a part of most people's lives, and left many people unconsciously involved. Why are social media so intriguing? If adult education program and activity design, and its LMS can have the function of social media, adult teaching would be able to play a greater educational role. Accordingly, how to make good use of the characteristics of social media to strengthen learners' participation and learning has become an important concern for adult educators. Therefore, by reviewing literatures, this paper synthetizes the characteristics of social media and the characteristics of adult learners and users of digital media, and then provides recommendations for future adult teaching. It is concluded that five characteristics of social media attract users to bet on it, including the media richness, the social presence, the externality of the networks, users being producers, and the flow experiences of the users. As far as institutions are concerned, social media are characterized by their convenience and applicability. However, educators must take into account learner’s characteristics, such as experiences, autonomy and reflection in their learning. Also, it is necessary to concern the differences in terms of learners’ ages/cohorts, education levels, digital gaps between urban and rural areas, and social and economic statuses. Further, this article provides an example of integrating social media into teaching according to the characteristics of the above-mentioned social media and adult learners by using Pratt and Associates’ general model of teaching as a framework. Finally, based on 5 elements and 3 relationships of the above general teaching model, this paper summarizes the principles of the application of social media in adult teaching for future reference of adult teaching. |
