This study was aimed to explore the barriers influencing the man with spinal cord injury actualizing their sexual rights through the user’s perspective. Purposed sampling method was utilized to recruit 8 male members from a spinal cord injury agency in south Taiwan while the data was analyzed with thematic analysis method. This research found that the injury events have caused their physical limitations and self-inferiority, decreasing experiences to make friends with females. Their family hardly recognized their sexual needs and rarely discussed with or assisted. They could only discuss sex issues with their injury peers or intimates. They thought that people didn’t understand their sexual health. Meanwhile, the individual difference of sexual health among them was huge and deemed as privacy thus was often ignored by the society. This study suggests that the sexual right of the man with spinal cord injury should be considered as an essential component of the personal whole health and individual assessment would be required to provide more humane services. |
