Whale-watching activity has become one of the most popular ecotourism in eastern Taiwan. Local communities benefit from eco-tourists' activities for income, jobs, tax revenue, and business opportunities brought by tourists. This paper evaluates the economic impacts of whale-watching activities in Hua-Tung Area using input-output model. Analysis shows whale-watching tour initiated in Hua-Tung in summer 1997 is becoming an important sector to eastern Taiwan. From 1997 to 2000, 130 thousands tourists made whale-watching trips to Hua-Tung area, creating 15-247jobs and increasing local income by N.T.$7-127millions and business taxes by 0.3-5.2 millions. An additional N.T $12-230 millions worth of output was also generated. |
