The objective of this research is to measure the productivity of the world's top 30 pulp and paper producing countries, including Taiwan, over the period 1991-2000. We calculated the Malmquist productivity index by using the nonparametric-frontier approach, and decomposed the index into two components: technical change and efficiency change. Empirical results showed that the productivity change of pulp and paper industry in the world ranged from Korea's -0.9% to Japan's and Canada's 2.4% over the sampled period. The Nordic nations (Finland, Norway, and Sweden) recorded 1,4%-1.6% improvement in performance. The productivity of Taiwan's pulp and paper industry increased by 1.4%, which was better than most emerging economy. The results also showed that Taiwan's productivity growth was attributed more to efficiency change than technical change. |
