Afghanistan's drug problem has been existed for a long time, but the threats drug bright were neglected because of political factors such as the invasion of great powers and civil wars. Since the fall of the Taliban regime in late 2001, new Afghan government with the help of international community has started on re-establishing its country. So far, we can have seen many concrete achievements, including a new constitution and national election. In spite of moving towards development of democratization, Afghanistan's drug problem still is unsolved yet and becomes more serious in the post-Taliban era than in past. Internal insecurity, official corruption, rural poverty, and divergent opinions of international community are main obstacles to counter-narcotics efforts supported positively by new Afghan administration and international community through proposing many policies and measures. In the future, actions of counter-narcotics in Afghanistan will confront many uncertain challenges, such as gradual withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan. However, the first priority at the present stage is to resolve root causes mentioned above. |
