Library Science greatly flourished during the 20th century. But the emergence of information science since the 1970's has changed the monopoly of library science in the management of library materials and information resources. This paper discusses the theoretical foundations of library science and intends to find out the basic elements and characteristics of library science. This paper hopes to show that library science would withstand all the challenges in its partnership with information science and continue to thrive and claim its significance in the 21st century. This paper discusses the following aspects: the meaning of library and library science; the mission, function, values and services of a library; the nature of library science; the theories of library science; the range of academic studies in library science; the ideas and development of library science education; the relationship between library science and information science; as well as the future development of library science. This paper concludes that library science will continue to stand in the 21st century and claim its importance through its partnership with information science to become one united study of library and information science. |
