Hong Kong had been the second-largest film export after Hollywood. It has influenced Taiwan impression by the audience around the world. From the late 1980s to 1990s, Hong Kong produced a large number of gangster movies, often featuring Taiwanese characters, and its image of Taiwan was all irrational ''spectacle'' imagination. This paper finds three Hong Kong gangster movies has a one-sided focus on vulgar behavior, backward image and other negative aspects of Taiwanese characteristics to be the examples of this special phenomenon. All three movies used Taiwan as a form of a mirror to strengthen Hong Kong people's own identity. In this period, Hong Kong gangster movies had used some tactics to complement their absence in history often. In the unsettling atmosphere of ''the handover of Hong Kong'' , perhaps it was the product of the collective consciousness of the time. However, Hong Kong movie has greatly occupied Taiwan's visual culture and have a profound impact on Taiwan's audience. The image of Taiwan based on the considerable amount of Hong Kong movies has somehow influent Taiwan people's own identity as well. This study tries to explore the internal and external factors of this layout and make the audience aware of the angle of the movie, rather than being limited by biased views. |
