The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of public librarians about the professional competencies, especially to explore the importance of the professional compentencies and librarians' capabilities. A questionnaire survey was distributed to in-service librarians of domestic public and private public libraries. Overall 441 valid surveys were received. The results of the survey indicate that the most important professional competence is emotion management; other top most important competencies include understanding the ethics of the profession, ability of conflict resolution & crisis management, effective communication techniques & ability of expression, and problem solving capability. In addition, public librarians consider that they quite understand the ethics of the profession, and possess good working attitude & service enthusiasm; on the other hand, they need to improve a few competencies such as information technology knowledge & skills, administration & management, and research & innovation. |
