A Comprehensive Commentary of the Chu Ci by Wang Fu-Chih (Wang Ch’uan-shan) has not received due emphasis from the perspective of Chu Ci studies. The Traditional approach to the book succeeded in revealing Wang’s sentiments toward being a adherent of a former Ming dynasty, still it failed to make a full interpretation of the author and his work. Wang’s book was reckoned to be a practice of typical Chu Ci exegesis. As a matter of fact, Wang’s exegetical attempts were based on his philosophic interpretation of The Four Books, which in consequence frameworks the philosophic in A Comprehensive Commentary of the Chu Ci.
