Unicycling has drawn more and more domestic attention in Taiwan recently. Most of the participants are primary and junior high school students and their physical and mental conditions are not mature. When people learn to ride unicycle, it is almost impossible to avoid falling. So far, no epidemiological statistics on unicycle injuries were revealed in Taiwan. Riders and coaches should be aware of the unicycling injury risks and have knowledge of sports injuries and prevention methods. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to investigate common unicycling injuries and injury causes. The most common injuries are fractures from falling off the unicycle followed by strain, sprain, abrasions and contusion in extremities. Since the limb fractures and extremity injuries are most common, beginners should learn the correct way to get off the unicycle to prevent those injuries in advance. In addition, the use of protective gear is essential, especially for the brain injury prevention, helmet use is very important. Relevant researches of unicycling injuries are needed for better understanding the injury mechanism and developing injury prevention strategies. |
