This study investigates the environment of present public senior care institutions in Taiwan through barrier-free design perspective using qualitative research including observation, in-depth interview and focus groups interview. This study is based on users’ need in senior facilities regarding geriatric behavior. Selected 7 willing institutions are distributed in 4 regions with different features in geographical locations, summed up common issues in applying barrier-free design cross-regionally. The environment was examined by semi-structured interview, representing both the 5 spatially hierarchical properties and the 4 principles of barrier-free design, with 3 groups of people including the manager, the caregiver and the elder of institutions. The investigation result was brought to the focus group interview for further discussion and analysis. To conclude, this study suggests several indications of adaptation for present institution, focused consideration of new-built institutions and future drift of senior care system in applying barrier-free design in senior care facilities. |
