(A new discourse for this age) recorded many romantic affairs of Emperor Chien-wen. He occupied a high position in the royal court but was not contaminated by any mundane practices. His simple and noble life style ascribed him as a sage of his era. However these sage attributes did not contribute to his governmental caliber. His royal court was not managed by the most capable persons and he was shrewd in political maneuvering. These led to the later usurping of power by Heng-wen, precipitating a decline of his regime. Emperor Chien-wen was a philosopher-emperor and was also a romantic sage. Dying at the age of 53, he was nominally on the throne for two years, but actually reigned for nine months only. We feel sad when we read the history of Emperor Chien-wen. Emperor Chien-wen was a benevolent emperor, led a simple life style and did not like flattering remarks. Although he had some shortfalls in his political performances, he was not entirely without contribution. Although his reign was not long, he actually ruled as a regent for thirty years, helping three young emperors. Emperor Chien-wen played an important role in stabilizing the political situation of East Chin Dynasty. |
