This paper refers to a number of Eileen Chang’s essays to make a detailed study of the short stories included in Chuanqi (傳奇 Romance) , her first collection of short stories. Consistently focusing on worldly affairs, Chang depicts the most primal and enduring of human emotions. In describing the experience of romantic love simply as “joy,” she imbues her text with a subtle mood which continually comes to the surface at various points. In these works Chang describes desolation; the intensity, urgency, and disappointments of romantic love; the emotional oppressiveness of parental love; and how love can be transformed into a dread that renders one’s entire world a place of gloom and doom. Despite her tragic story lines, Chang manages to also present the tolerant and caring side of human nature, juxtaposing dread and love to create a space for the emergence of sympathy and forgiveness, using cold-heartedness to set the stage for the emergence of genuine kindness. |
