2019 DRIA(Design Resilience in ASIA) design competition“Re-Think the Growing Chennai, Re-Imagine the Shrinking Pallikaranai Marsh”focuses on the Pallikaranai Marsh recovering in facing the increasing population and urban sprawl, in which informal encroachments and regional dump yard are contaminating and destroying the water bodies.“Water Refactoring”proposes a feasible and site-sensitive design that creates a community-based water, solid waste, and sewage management system. With circular as physical and conceptual strategies, the proposal provides small-scale spatial and social engagements with the temple tank and marsh water systems amending the practice of large-scale water and waste management. Richhabitual and circular re-connections of the urban context and productive landscape bring awareness to the hydrological and ecological dynamics of themarsh. The dual interconnected and circular up-stream and down-stream designs create a new prototype which is also replicable throughout the whole marsh region, and adaptable to other water bodies in Chennai. |
