Shen Ming Gong An is known as Ding Diao Guo Chao Xian Tai Zhe Yu Su Yuan Shen Ming Gong An in full, yet its author and the year of publication are both unknown due to the missing pages. In total, there are 12 legal cases preserved in this book; three of which are incomplete resulted from titleless and missing pages, and four illustrations covering one of the half pages preserve important textual information of the time. This paper investigates the potential relations between this book and other detective-style novels appeared during the Ming dynasty in terms of their compilation strategies and narrative features. The investigation is based on the study of Shen Ming Gong An which was included in Gu Ben Xiao Shuo Ji Cheng, a publication of Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House in 1990. Through the abovementioned questions and analyses, despite the fact that the existing legal cases in Shen Ming Gong An do not present the full picture, we can still further analyze the compilation strategies and narrative features of Shen Ming Gong An from the perspective of the relationships among those continuity legal cases preserved in volume 1 and 2. In doing so, it is able to fill the missing gap in the past studies of Ming dynasty detective-style novels. |
