In the United States, many academic libraries recruit graduate students majoring in library and information science to assist in their reference service. Not only do the academic libraries welcome these graduate students with a professional background to librarianship, but departments and programs of library and information science also encourage their graduate students to work as reference assistants in libraries. These graduate students hence have an opportunity to cumulate their practical experiences in library reference service, which would be very helpful in their future application for related jobs in academic libraries. This article adopts literature analysis and qualitative interview to explore the feasibility of recruiting library and information science graduate students as reference assistants in libraries. In conclusion, this research sums up the findings in five aspects and proposes that this strategy is practicable and reciprocal to both academic libraries and the graduate students. |
