This study looks into dream interpretations in Taiping Guangji. In many dream stories, it is not uncommon to see different interpretations of a same dream-some are consistent, while others can be markedly different, or even conflicting. Different interpretations of the same dream are indicative of the multifacetedness of dreams. Dream as a symbolic language is worthy of further investigation. This study discusses the following two aspects: 1. Exploring the different interpretations of dreamers, dream interpreters, narrators, and even authors in dream stories to illustrate the possibilities of dream interpretations. 2. Discussing the conflicting interpretations of the same dream through the examples of ''one dream, different interpretations'' and ''self-contradiction in dream interpretations''. Different or even conflicting interpretations within a text shows that dream as a symbol can be construed liberally. Dream interpretations may vary with interpreters' cultural and psychological backgrounds, and hence the coexistence of harmony and conflict in the dream stories of Taiping Guangji. |
