This study analyzes the historical materials, newspapers, magazines, and government bulletins related to the bicycle competitions in Jiangsu Province from a micro-historical perspective, with the aim to expound the historical appearance and significance of the competition. The results showed that after entering China, the role of bicycles has evolved from imported goods to transportation in daily lives, and then become sports equipment for competition. In 1932, the ''slow race format'' of the bicycle competition in the 1st Public Amateur Sports Meeting in Jiangsu Province was the beginning of the development of the following five bicycle competitions in the province. Furthermore, the five cycling competitions held from 1932-1936 revealed the Chinese's interest in participating and watching cycling events and also demonstrated the progress of the competition system. However, the addition of the women's group, the number of participants, and the actual execution of the events indicated that the people of Jiangsu Province in the 1930s had different viewpoints on the body image between women riding stylish bikes and participating in cycling competitions. Still, overall speaking, the cycling competition in Jiangsu Province has led to the popularity of the sport, which has not only promoted the people's exercising habits, but also helped break the boundaries and connected different class, enhancing the atmosphere among all groups. |
