The purpose of this study is to investigate the sport injury experience of college students, including medical care seeking tendency after injury, and preventive strategies against sport injury before and during sports or exercise by means of a questionnaire survey. The participants consisted of 572 students on the Kaohsiung Campus of Shih Chien University. The collected data were processed by such statistical methods as frequency distribution, means, cross-tabulation analysis, and multiple response analysis, and the following conclusions were obtained: First, the highest percentage of sport injuries occurred when the participants played sports or exercised by themselves. Most of the injuries occurred during training to the participants who joined the school teams who played sports or exercised at least nine hours per week. Second, ankle sprains was the top one in the latest injuries that the college students suffered, and the majority of the repeated injuries were the same areas, especially male participants, participants who joined the representative teams, and participants who played sports or exercised for longer hours per week. Third, most of the participants immediately applied ice packs as the method of first aid right after getting injured. Teachers were the main source of their knowledge of injury treatment, while coaches were the main source of knowledge for the school team members. Most of the participants tended to seek western medicine treatment after injury, and their own experiences regarding medical care constituted the major consideration for their medical care seeking tendency. A considerable percentage of the participants chose to ignore their injuries at the moment of and after getting injured. Fourth, most of the participants performed a thorough warm-up as the preventive strategy against injury before sports or exercise, followed by improving their athletic capabilities. The major preventive strategy during sports or exercise was wearing suitable clothes, shoes, and socks, followed in order by staying hydrated and controlling the amount and intensity of sports or exercise. |
