China's steady growth has put it on a path to become a great trading power globally and a primary initiator of trading rules regionally. This paper takes the ongoing FTA between China and ASEAN as a showcase and argues that this FTA by itself has the dynamism to alter the economic and geopolitical landscape in East Asia that will put Taiwan at a disadvantage, both economic and politically, in terms of its being excluded from any trade bloc. However, the exact consequences or costs that Taiwan must face will mainly depend on how sincerely the FTA is implemented. Besides, the FTA between China and ASEAN might have unexpected, indirect and positive effects on the demand for cross-Strait links. |
