The number of tourists visiting Nantou County increased from 1 million in 2008 to 5.5 million in 2012. The increasing number of tourists generate large amounts of garbage. To collect and sort the general and recyclable garbage produced by tourists, numerous general trash cans and recycling trash cans have been installed at the Sun Moon Lake tourist area for tourists to dispose of garbage. To understand the sorting effectiveness between general and recyclable garbage, this study focused on three locations at the Sun Moon Lake tourist area for analyzing the garbage composition of general and recycling trash cans by using manual on-site sampling. The result of this study indicated that recyclable garbage was disposed of in the general trash cans. The top three misplaced recyclable garbage in the general trash cans were food waste, paper waste, and plastic waste. In addition, general garbage, such as nonrecyclable tissue paper was found in the recyclable trash cans. The amount (85.8%) of misplaced recyclable garbage in the general trash cans was considerably larger than the amount (9.97%) of misplaced general garbage in the recycling trash cans. This indicates that the sorting between general and recyclable garbage at the Sun Moon Lake tourist area is markedly ineffective. Thus, strategies must be implemented to improve the garbage sorting effectiveness at the Sun Moon Lake tourist area. |
