This paper draws resources from Husserl and Ricoeur's phenomenology to explain the eidetic structure of memory construction. Confabulation is a kind of memory construction, which is a process consisting of the moment of imagination and the moment of remembering. Throughout the process of confabulation, the act of imagination supersedes the act of remembering. The imagined is constituted as the remembered, thereby it has no temporal relationship with the past. By means of the eidetic structure of confabulation and memory construction, I argue that the causal theory of mnemonic confabulation and the epistemic of mnemonic confabulation as well as the imagination theory and the temporality theory discuss only a moment of the whole process. |
