Since 2008, Taichung Veterans General Hospital provided medical service and medical teaching to the republic of Nauru in response to our government's foreign policy. Nauru is a small island country lacking natural resources. Nauruans' have a hight prevalence rate of obesity and type II Diabetes, with a considerable amount of smoking population. To address these issues, further strategy has been implemented to set up medical center-level medical care services, which are extended to the community and schools by outreach visits. In addition, a mobile medical team consisting of surgeons and nurses is sent to Nauru twice a year to conduct difficult operations. Our medical services have reduced the death rate of Nauruan adults due to metabolism and related complications, and the death rate of neonatal and children, and smoking population. The Nauruans' average life expectancy has increased in these 10 years. Our cross-border medical services have won the trust and recognition of Nauruan people. We will continue to offer medical services to the Nauruan people, be dedicated to the promotion of national friendship with Nauru and to demonstrating Taiwan's medical soft power. |
