The genus Thunbergia (Acanthaceae) comprises of about 100 species restricted to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Madagascar, Asia, and Australia, of which two have been recorded from Taiwan. They are T. alata Bojer ex Sims, a common weed found from low to medium elevations throughout the island, and T. fragrans Roxb., found in central parts of the island. We conducted a field survey on Thunbergia in Taiwan. Seven species were found: the recently naturalized T. grandiflora Roxb. and T. laurifolia Lindl., an escapee T. erecta (Benth.) T. Anderson, and Taiwan cultivated T. mysorensis (Wight) T. Anderson and T. vogeliana Benth. This paper is a brief description of these six species with a key and photographs to aid identification. |
