Setting maximum residues levels (MRLs) of pesticide in foods or produce is essential for agricultural products or food safety management in countries. APEC economies are required to take into account of food safety for protecting consumers' health and reduce unnecessary trade barriers. It is necessary for APEC economies to have a guideline on possible approaches to achieve alignment of international MRLs under the theme of regional economic and trade liberalization. In view of this, APEC published import MRL guideline for pesticides in 2016 through discussion within APEC economies including Taiwan. This article described its contents and explained the various situations that may be faced when setting MRL standards. Using the illustration of scenarios, stakeholders include food safety managers, food business operators, consumers and others can understand the principles of MRL setting. It will be helpful for risk communication in pesticide residue management in the future. |
