In this study, 715 samples of commercial dietary supplements were analyzed for the presence of pharmaceutical adulterants from the year 2017 to 2018. The results showed that 57.6% (412/715) of the samples were adulterated. Among them, 554 samples from consumer service centers of the local health authorities and other governmental institutions were found 61.4% (340/554) adulterated. The 161 inspection samples from local health authorities were found 44.7% (72/161) adulterated. The most adulterated supplements, were used for weight loss (218 samples) and erectile dysfunction treatment (182 samples). The top three adulterants were sibutramine, sildenafil and phenolphthalein. In addition to pharmaceutical chemicals, sixteen analogues of sildenafil and tadalafil were found. This report will be provided to the administrative authorities as reference in policy making. |
