We live in a time of unprecedented technological evolution. In January 2017, McKinsey Global Institute reports an estimate that by 2030, fourteen percent of the global workforce--between seventy five and 375 million human workers—will be required to change “occupational categories” as a consequence of automation through Artificial Intelligence. Oxford University forecast that up to fifty percent of current jobs could be replaced by smart machines within the next twenty years, while the rest remain to write the programming for this new world of artificial intelligence: causing technical dominance to threaten the future of both education and employment in the humanities. In order to adjust to the inevitable universalization of artificial intelligence in the work force, renowned linguistics scholar and President of Northeastern University Joseph E. Aoun appeals for an emphasis on higher education in Robot-Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: offering insight and recommendations for colleges and universities to better equip students for a “robot-proofed” future.
