In order to promote childhood cultures of new residents in Taiwan, the National Science and Technology Museum (hereinafter referred as the NSTM) planned the ''KidsFest of 5 ASEAN Countries'' (hereinafter referred as the KidsFest) special exhibition. It covers the birth to the sixth grade of primary school to introduce the related cultures of Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Children's toys, games, desserts, nursery rhymes, stories, clothes at different ages from these 5 ASEAN countries are featured. Visitors can learn and explore the customs of these countries and their scientific significance through exhibitions and related activities. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this special exhibition, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 5 groups of local parent-child visitors and 10 groups of new residents and their children. The content of the interview was constructed based on the exhibition goals. Its summative evaluation presents the following conclusions. The interviewees gave high marks for the exhibition contents, which use daily life models, graphics, multimedia, audio and video, and physical objects. They commented that the display and design methods are generally effective. The warm atmosphere created with cartoon characters in the exhibition really attracts the attention of the public. Overall, the rich contents are interesting and with characteristics and educational significance. In arousing their interest in exploring Southeast Asian cultures, the respondents generally expressed their interest in continuing to explore. They even suggested that during the experience activities, the public should be encouraged to take photos and post them to social media to promote the exhibition. New residents said that using museum, as a platform to introduce their cultures is very good. This exhibition not only reduced their homesickness, but also helped them reconnect with their origins. The second generation of new residents expressed their willingness to take their friends to this exhibition and helped them gain new knowledge. This special exhibition also awakened their memories of their mothers' teachings and made them appreciate the exotic cultures that are familiar and yet somehow strange in their lives. |
