This paper presents a preliminary study of building an online community for language revitalization in Taiwan by creating an interactive web space which integrate several social media outlets such as Facebook page, YouTube channel, Twitter, and Flickr albums. We investigate language learning processes of young generation in Taiwan and propose that promoting the awareness of native languages and creating conversations among native language users are the two core works of this online community. We then analyze the messages posted on this platform during the first six months of its launch and conduct a series of focus group interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of this online platform. Results indicate that social media(e.g., Facebook) can be an effective online tool to connect native language learners for informational interaction, experience sharing, and community networking. Several suggestions are proposed for using social media as a new approach to language revitalization. |
