Although a mixed Southern Min dialect with a “common accent” has prevailed in Gāoxióng City, there are in fact still places in the city where can be heard a Quan accent, a situation which has not been well documented. This article is a study of the Quan accent variety of Southern Min found at Dàlínpú in the Xiǎogǎng District of Gāoxióng City, an area covering Dàlínpú and Hóngmáogǎng near the Línhǎi Industrial Park and the Taiwan Strait. Owing to its isolation, a unique tone system has been preserved, although in recent years modern transportation and communication have brought about change: The common Southern Min tonal system has started to mix with those of the other dialect varieties in the city in many respects. The result of this research is a complete description of the Quan accent tonal system of Dàlínpú. |
