英文摘要 |
As the title indicates, this paper is an examination of Professor Tung T'ung-ho's contributions to linguistics. It begins with a general discussion of the way how Professor Tung, under the influence of various teachers, took on academic pursuit as his life long devotion. It continues to highlight Professor Tung's accomplishments in four major fields: Archaic Chinese phonology, Ancient Chinese phonology, modern Chinese dialects---the study on the Min dialects, and the Austronesian languages. On the study of the Chinese language, Professor Tung focused on phonology and dialects, two interwoven subjects, and paid special attention to the historical development from the past to the present. On the study of Austronesian languages, his book in English, A Descriptive Study of the Tsou Language, was the most complete report on Taiwan Austronesian languages at his time. |
