This study analyzed old photos, textual historical materials, and style of stone crafts of Xin A-Jiu and posited that, before he became well-known, he had created crafts in the Shitoushan Quanhua Temple in Miaoli, where he worked with and exchanged knowledge with various other craftspeople. His time working in the temple became a turning point in his career in stonemasonry. Xin A-Jiu became well-known after creating a pair of magnificent dragon pillars in the main hall of the Mengjia Longshan Temple in the 1920s. This main hall was destroyed in World War II; however, according to images in Daisaku Tanaka’s Research on Taiwanese Architecture, a study conducted during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, this study posited that the work Xin A-Jiu created for the Mengjia Longshan Temple was a pair of dragon pillars at the middle gate. These images also served as proof of Xin A-Jiu’s work, which made him famous in Taiwan. |
