Reognition thresholds were obtained for 72 Chinese characters varying in four factors (3 levels of meaningfulness, 2 levels of number of strokes, 2 levels of word formation, and 2 levels of word shape) combined factorially. The factor of meaningfulness was between-Ss variables, and the other factors were within-Ss variables. It was found that the variables of meaningfulness and number of strokes were related to recognition threshold as expected. The variables of word formation and word shape, which are peculiar to Chinese characters, had no effect on recognition threshold. |
