It is generally agreed that the Overseas Chinese all over the world constitute ''a fascinating laboratory for social scientists of various disciplinary bents' (Fried, 1959, P. v.). This is particularly true for the study of acculturation and personality change because of the diversity of alien socio-cultural settings in which they have resided, the unlikeness of Chinese subcultures they have represented, and the wide discrepancy between their host and mother cultures. In spite of the excellence of the Overseas Chinese as subjects for the study of acculturation and assimilation on personality change, relevant studies in the literature are few and scattered. Furthermore, m.ost of these studies were concerned with the Overseas Chinese in Hawaii and the continental United States. In other parts of the world, especially in Southeast Asia, practically no form.al and systematic investigation on Oveaseas Chinease personality has been carried out. |
